One Year in Oz

When Sharon and I first got to Australia, we were like newborn babies, absorbing everything around us and trying to make sense of it all. We loved it, and we still do. It has been a struggle at times, adjusting to and trying to create a life here and missing out on things at home. In the end, it’s worth it though.

One year later, I have just quit my job and am aggressively looking for a new one. But I do make time for some reading in the park to take advantage of the weather. And dye my hair purple and make necklaces that say “cunt”.

On March 28th, our anniversary, we head to CBD and have our favourite dinner, chargrilled pork loin, at Cheers, which was the bar where we used to eat and then drink when we first got here. We are definitely a bit overdressed for an Irish sports bar, where we only drink Coke with our meal BTW, but we enjoy being back at our old watering hole.

We then head down to the Opera House, which we were so excited to see on our very first day in Sydney. We went out for a short walk and saw the top of Sydney Harbour Bridge and ended up following it, which led to the longest walk where we saw Observatory Hill, The Rocks and most importantly, The Opera House. We were so friggin’ excited, so of course we have to celebrate by seeing it again and ticking off something important on my bucket list: having drinks at Opera Bar. We go there and see a controversial couple from the popular TV show First Dates, and it looks like they’re still together.

We share a bottle of wine while watching the sunset and reminiscing about everything we’ve been through the past year, good and bad. We also creep on cute guys and realize that the Husband Hunt, which we dubbed our Oz trip before we came out, has been unfruitful.

What’s kinda sad about having been here for so long is that I’ve completely climatised. Even though it’s 22 degrees outside, I am wearing a thick sweater, long pants and socks and I’m still freezing. How will I ever be able to return to the cold North!?  But hey, I love living in Sydney and I love Australia! So if anyone reads this and has the power to let me stay forever, please get in touch.
